Lot Essay

This painting contains the majestic, convoluted mountain ridge, soft atmosphere, and craggy pines that were closely associated with the Northern Song dynasty masters, especially Guo Xi (ca. 1020-ca. 1090), and shows the continuation of this important stylistic tradition into the Ming dynasty.

As indicated by the mounting and wood box, this painting was part of a Japanese collection, as were many paintings of this kind. This painting is accompanied by a receipt dated February 4, 1957 for a kakemono ("hanging scroll") from Davis Furniture Company in Long Beach, California, which was known for carrying furniture and antiques.
