One a small cong, the semi-translucent stone of pale greenish-grey color suffused with small buff inclusions and with areas of russet color; the other a sheng-shaped square ornament with flat center and canted shoulders on each side, with slits cut in two of the shoulders, the stone of white color with russet staining

Lot Essay

The square shape of the ornament, with its two slits, is known as sheng-shaped and is related to a white jade ornament dated Ming dynasty illustrated by Huang Xuangpei (ed.), Jade Wares of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing Unearthed from Shanghai, Shanghai, 2001, p. 153.
