Xiyuan was a beautiful garden located near Suzhou and was ideal for quiet contemplation and study. Strolling through the grounds presented numerous picturesque vistas. The garden was owned by Zhu Xiyuan (1890-1969), who was formally named Zhu Gui. He came from Jingxian in Anhui province and was good at garden architecture. He studied calligraphy and painting from Zeng Xi. Because of his outgoing and amiable character and love of travel, many calligraphers and painters gave him art works as gifts.
