A WHITE JADE RECTANGULAR PLAQUE
19TH-20TH CENTURY
The plaque is carved on one side in low relief with a panel depicting two magpies, one perched on a rock, and the other on a prunus branch. The reverse is carved with four characters in seal-script reading Xishang meishao (May your joy reach up to the top of your eyebrows). The stone is of even, pale tone with a small russet inclusion at one corner.

Lot Essay

Magpies (xique) depicted alighting on prunus branches (mei) form the rebus xishang meishao, as magpies are symbols of joy, and the plum is a pun for 'eyebrows' (mei).
