A VERY RARE CARVED WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE
1780-1850
The bottle is of flattened, irregular shape and shallowly carved toward the bottom of either side with a bat extending its wings around the sides and extending its head upwards towards a large yan character on one side, and a nian character on the other, with pale russet markings on one side.
2 ¼ in. (5.6 cm.) high, green plastic stopper with metal collar

Lot Essay

The two characters, yan and nian, may be translated as ‘prolonged life’ and are combined here with two bats, extending a further wish for 'double happiness’.
