Lot Essay

Compare the two red lacquer cup stands of similar shape illustrated in The Colors and Forms of Song and Yuan China: Featuring Lacquerwares, Ceramics, and Metalwares, Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 2004, nos. 154 and 157, the first with black lacquer on the underside of the dish and on the exterior of the foot, the exterior of the second in all red lacquer. Like the present example, the Nezu cup stands have narrow metal mounts to protect the thin rims.
