Lot Essay

The present work depicts a view of the Clyde River towards Dumbarton Rock, Scotland, where Dumbarton Castle sits. In the nineteenth century, Dumbarton was a center for shipbuilding, glassmaking and whiskey production. Cornelius Krieghoff was living in Montreal, Quebec, at the time he painted this work and was likely inspired by a British painting or print of the same subject.
