A label on the frame reads, "General Phillip Henry Sheridan was one of the most successful commanders of the Union cavalry. This painting depicts Company L of the cavalry regiment deployed and ready for battle early on the morning of October 19th, 1864 outside Cedar Creek."

The present work was featured on a commemorative first day stamp produced by the MBI: Postal Commemorative Society.
