Lot Essay

A preparatory drawing for a related sprinkler, although decorated with lions and with a spout made of intertwined elephant heads, indicates that these were probably produced in Lucknow circa 1780-1820 (Linda York Leach, Paintings from India, Oxford, 1998, cat.56, p.190-1.) The devanagari inscription around the base of the spout has not been deciphered.
