Lot Essay

A closely related painting titled 'Rules for the Manoeuvres of the Hindustani Musket Cavalry' is in the National Army Museum, London, dated to circa 1824 (NAM. 1977-07-10-1 https://www.nam.ac.uk/online-collection/detail.php?acc=1977-07-10-1).

Colonel James Skinner (1778-1841) was a prominent Military commander who founded the famous First and Third ‘Skinner’s Horse’ regiments. In reward for his services he was granted lands in Haryana. Skinner was a prominent member of society in Delhi and became closely acquainted with William and James Fraser who were known for their commissioning and promoting European-style portraits and landscape drawings and paintings of great significance.
