QAJAR IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form, the hinged flat cover top and case base with polychrome painted decoration consisting of portrait of a young lady holding a floral bud in a lobed medallion, a smaller similar medallion with a portrait of a young man above and below, on intricate scrolling floral ground, the borders with scrolling foliate tendrils in cusped cartouches interspersed with gold and green quatrefoils on red ground; the reverse with a depiction of the Prophet's flight on Buraq, two cherubs above and below, framed with cusped calligraphic cartouches in elegant gold nasta'liq script on black ground between two bands of floral motifs
