Lot Essay

This manuscript is an abridged version of Hilyat al-Awliya’ wa Tabaqat al-Asfiya’ by Abu Nu’aim al-Isfahani (D. 1038 AD). It consists of biographies of saints and mystics of early Islam and comprises 10 volumes. It was abridged by al-Jawzi (d. 1200 AD) under the titles Safwat al-Safwa and Sifat al-Safwa. This manuscript is probably one of those abridgements.

There are seven copies in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, see U. Lyons, A Handlist of the Arabic Manuscript, volume VIII and Indexes, Dublin, 1966. See Brockelmann, GAL, i. 362 , Suppl.  i. 617.
