Lot Essay

This type of amphora was widely distributed throughout southern Etruria. The style is typical of the early Orientalizing period, dating 700-680 B.C. The amphorae were wheel-thrown and formed of a brown, unrefined clay known as impasto. For similar, cf. Musée du Louvre inv. no. 1986 C551.
