AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED HYDRIA
ATTRIBUTED TO A FOLLOWER OF THE SNUB-NOSE AND VARRESE PAINTERS, CIRCA 350-330 B.C.
With a female figure seated on an Ionic capital, wearing a chiton, beaded necklace and pendant earrings, holding a ball of wool in her raised right hand, another female figure standing before her, wearing a chiton, an elaborate fan in her raised left hand, a berried garland in her right, both with hair bound in fillets and sakkos, within a central Ionic naiskos with pointed pediment surmounted by palmettes, ball, ribbon and aryballos within the structure, a female figure on either side, to the left holding a mirror in her left hand and budded branch in crook of right arm and leaning on a pillar, to the right holding a bunch of grapes in her right hand and tambourine in her raised left, a cista beneath each, fillets, rosettes and a branch in the field, a band of meander below, wave around mouth, berried olive wreath with central rosette around neck, large elaborate palmettes and volutes beneath and to either side of rear handle, with details in added red, white and yellow
