The design draws its influence from Persian Safavid ornament as seen in a medallion lattice carpet of 'Vase' type, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Arthur Upham Pope, A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pp.1236-7). The popularity of this design continued into the 20th century and was used by the Koum Kapi master silk weavers in Istanbul which in turn influenced the weavers in Hereke. A magnificent Koum Kapi carpet that sold in these Rooms, 24 April 2012, lot 50, displays the beautifully coloured and arranged design at its most accomplished.

The knot count is approximately 10V x 10H per cm. sq.
