A FAUX BOIS-GLAZED AND SEPIA-DEOCRATED 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
The quatrefoil plaque is decorated in the centre with an elliptical cartouche inscribed with the characters zhai jie (abstinence) in white slip and adorned with grisaille and sepia-enamelled scrolls, surrounded by a faux bois glaze between gilt borders. The reverse bears similar decorations with the characters inscribed in Manchu.
