Lot Essay

the datemark and name incised in the base of this piece finally revealed its true origins. Although post-war examples in coloured glazes with a Geoffrey Gooden monogram are known, it was neither designed by him or Clarice Cliff. The deigner Fred Ellis joined Wilkinson's from a Spanish manufacturing company as Clay Production Manager in the mid thirties. Probably a trial piece, early examples such as this had a Clarice Cliff backstamp
