Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste Pillement’s debt to the 17th-century Dutch Italianates is evident here in both the figure of the departing herdsman and in the sunlit palette. The work is a fine example of the artist’s accomplished rendering of light and atmosphere and can be compared to Herdsmen and Cattle at a Stream in the Liechtenstein Collection, Vienna.
