Lot Essay

Marie Leszczynska married Louis XV (1710-1774) in 1725. This portrait miniature is after a full scale work by Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) now at the Château de Versailles, which became the most famous image of the Queen and was copied many times.

A work by Sené in a private collection, from which the current example derives was exhibited Geneva, Musée Historique de Lousanne, 100 Ans de Miniatures Suisses, 1780-1880, 1999, no. 39. Another was sold Sotheby's, London, 11 February 1999, lot 160.
