Emblematic of the Schedlt River in western Belgium, the present figure is a 19th century copy of Pierre-Denis Plumier’s (d. 1721) original in marble commissioned for the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville in Brussels. In addition to l’Escaut, the artist executed the accompanying four figures of putti in collaboration with his student Laurent Delvaux (d. 1778).
