The present pair is based on a series of four figure groups sculpted by Johannes Schilling (German, 1828-1910) in 1868. Emblematic of "The Four Times of Day", these larger than life bronze sculptures sit at the foot of the Brühl Terrace staircase in Dresden. Schilling is perhaps best known for his massive figure of Germania surmounting the Niederwald National Monument near Hesse. See Dr. K. Berling, Meissen China and Illustrated History, New York, 1972. pp. 94 and 97, fig. 238.
