Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916), to whom this tile formerly belonged was a British Field Marshal and colonial administrator who won fame for his imperial campaigns - in 1898 he won the Battle of Omdurman and secured control of the Sudan, after which he was given the title ‘Lord Kitchener of Khartoum’. He later went on to Egypt as British Agent and Consul General before becoming Secretary of State for War in 1914. His commanding image appeared on the famous recruiting posters which called ‘Your Country Needs You!’.
