Lot Essay

Julius Caesar Ibbetson was active in the Lake District between 1799 and 1805, living near Ambleside from 1801.  The viewpoint of this painting of the famous double-arched bridge at Grange is very similar to that of the engraving after Joseph Farington 'The Grange, in Borrowdale', published in 1784, and the artist is also aware of the aquatint with the same title published by the artist Peter Holland in Liverpool in 1792.
