Lot Essay

Collectors have been intrigued between the centre and sides of these. The middle section was an elaborate print, which was then heavily enamelled in a mass of colours. The machine that produced the print was not wide enough to cover all eighteen inches, so the two side panels had to be completely hand painted. For this reason they are basically foliage with no figures as can be seen. These chargers were very expensive when first produced and the two main decorators were Fred Ridgway, one of Clarice Cliff's early bosses, and 'Bizarre Girl' Ellen Browne
