The Anatomy of the Bones, Muscles and Joints. Edinburgh: G. Mudie, [1793]. 8°-in-4s (256 x 160mm). Engraved title. (Possibly lacking a blank leaf after last leaf of contents, title faintly spotted.) Original boards, uncut (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Hugh Cecil, Earl of Lonsdale (armorial bookplate). EXTREMELY RARE SINGLE-VOLUME FIRST EDITION of this authoritative surgical text-book which accompanies (but which was originally available separately from) the atlas sold with this lot.
[Sold with:] -- Engravings, Explaining the Anatomy of the Bones, Muscles, and Joints. Edinburgh: Printed by John Paterson for Bell and Bradfute, 1794. 4° (268 x 208 mm). Additional engraved title, errata leaf, 32 engraved plates, one of which folding, and two engraved vignettes in text. (Variable light spotting and soiling, plate XI torn with repair to verso and without loss, a few minor marginal nicks and tears, a few plates trimmed close by the binder.) Contemporary calf (rebacked and recornered, rubbed). FIRST EDITION of Bell's celebrated surgical atlas.
Encouraged by an artistic mother, John Bell received early training in drawing. He was one of the first to apply anatomical teachings to surgery. From 1786-1799 he was Scotland's premier teacher of surgical anatomy, and his anatomical writings and illustrations were geared to the needs of the operative surgeon. Bell's atlas is illustrated mostly with his own engravings and etchings after his own paintings, and represents a new, more realistic and less idealized style of anatomical illustration. Roberts & Tomlinson, p. 491; Heirs of Hippocrates 1187 (atlas); Russell, British Anatomy 59 (text) and 60 (atlas); Wellcome II, p.137.
