Sinai and Palestine. London, Glasgow and Edinburgh: William Mackenzie [1862]. 4º (440 x 315mm). 37 albumen prints (c.160 x c.230mm, or the reverse), including a smaller print mounted on the additional title (143 x 115mm). (Occasional scattered spotting mainly on guards and in margins, some leaves detached.) Contemporary green sheep-backed cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, sides with blind ruled borders, the upper side lettered in gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (spine rubbed and scuffed, front joint starting at the head, scattered spotting, short tear in cloth of lower board).

The first volume in the second, enlarged edition of Frith's Egypt, Palestine and Nubia, originally published in 1859. ‘The prints in this edition are of much stronger quality than those in the first edition having been gold-toned' (Gernsheim). Gernsheim Incunabula 195; cf. The Photobook, vol. I, p.28 ('one of the most renowned nineteenth-century photobooks').
