ATLAS FROM THE FIRST OFFICIAL EDITION OF COOK'S LAST VOYAGE. The voyage called at Tasmania, New Zealand, various islands in Micronesia including Tahiti, before heading northwards and discovering Hawaii, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook then sailed along the north-west Pacific coastline of North America, surveying as far as the Bering Strait, where he was stopped by pack ice. Returning to Hawaii to over-winter, Cook was killed by the islanders in a dispute over a boat. The present lot illustrates many of these episodes from the voyage and includes portraits of the peoples encountered by the expedition. Beddie 1543; Hill 361; Holmes 47.
