Lot Essay

Three receipted accounts from Philip Gandon are retained in the archives at Blair Castle, two from 1754 and one from 1755. Whilst there is clear reference to a silver-mounted gun with "Water Barrel" ordered on 30 July 1753 (probably lot 198), there is no specific mention of a brass-mounted gun with a similar "Water Barrel", albeit with straight groove rifling. There are orders for a total of 12 "brass mounted fowling pieces" noted in the receipted accounts, six being ordered at the same time as the sliver-mounted gun and a further half dozen engraved with crests ordered in 1755. Please see W. Keith Neal & D.H.L. Back, Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790, London, 1975, p. 85 and pls. 232-4.
