A PAIR OF YELLOW-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE 'MEDALLION' BOWLS
DAOGUANG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1821-1850)
Each bowl is finely enamelled to the exterior with four gilt-bordered roundels enclosing leafy branches of chrysanthemum, aster and lingzhi, separated by peach branches tied with a wan character, reserved on a vibrant sgraffiato yellow ground. The interior is painted in shades of underglaze cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing rocks, waves, lingzhi and bamboo, encircled by further sprigs of chrysanthemums and lingzhi.
5 7/8 in. (15 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The present bowls are imbued with a multitude of auspicious wishes, with peaches meaning 'longevity' and lingzhi that of 'fulfilment and long life'. These types of bowls were particularly popular during the Daoguang reign, with examples including those included in the exhibition, Qing Mark and Period Monochromes and Enamelled Wares, S. Marchant and Son, London, July 1981, no. 59; and a pair of bowls sold at Christie's New York, 20 September 2005, lot 1551.
