"Io utilizzo superfici monocrome, quanto più immateriali possibili, e le modello per creare curve duplicate con elementi ripetuti in serie: una serie di punti in rilievo ed un'altra che forma delle depressioni, poli positivi e negativi, ed una serie di minimi interventi operativi. Essi sono costituiti da una membrana piatta, e tali caratteristiche fisiche - elasticità e continuità spaziale - non sono alterate dal processo di creazione... Le strutture che risultano da tale operazione sono abbinate ad altre che sono allo stesso tempo uguali e opposte, e perci si annullano a vicenda nell'organizzazione della totalità spaziale. Anche la realtà ha sempre un punto di vista frontale e uno opposto, i quali, interagendo, si annullano a turno l'uno con l'altro"

La tela appartiene ad una serie di lavori titolati Superficie o semplicemente Opaline, o Superfici opaline. Il nome rimanda chiaramente all'opale, una pietra che, per colore, venature e trasparenza, è accostabile alla tonalità che caratterizza parte della superficie di queste opere, realizzate secondo il criterio per cui la superficie introflessa ed estroflessa è dipinta ad acrilico, mentre il resto della tela è coperto da resine poliestere.
Le Superfici opaline nascono nel 1970 e per circa cinque anni Enrico Castellani continuerà a sperimentare in questo ambito, trattando la tela con resine, acrilici, colle ed altre sostanze in grado di rendere un effetto di trasparenza.
Questa serie di lavori è composta da circa quaranta opere, alcune delle quali di grandi dimensioni; questa tipologia di trattamento della superficie della tela, che permette che parte della struttura che regge l'opera sia svelata parzialmente, viene investigata dall'artista soltanto in quegli anni. Un possibile riferimento è riscontrabile nelle opere di solo sicofoil non dipinto realizzate da Carla Accardi. Una parentesi breve e felice per Accardi, come per Castellani del resto... entrambi operano in un clima di riflessione sulla pittura e sui suoi mezzi e i loro risultati sono altissimi, dettati dall'estrema consapevolezza dei mezzi impiegati e dall'irrefrenabile desiderio di ridurre i mezzi espressivi ai minimi termini.
"I use monochrome surfaces, as immaterial as possible and shape to form double curves with repeated elements: a series of points in relief and points forming depressions, negative and positive poles, and a series of minimal operative interventions. They are constituted by a flat membrane, the physical characteristics of which - elasticity and spatial continuity - are not altered by the process of formation... The structures resulting from this operation are matched by others that are both equal and opposite and thus cancel each other out in the organization of spatial totality. Reality, too, always has an obverse and a reverse that, by fitting together, deny each other in turn".

The canvas belongs to a series of works titled Superficie or simply Opaline or even Superfici opaline. The name clearly recalls opal, a stone that, for its color, veining and transparency, is similar to the tonalities characteristic of the canvases in these works, realized according to criteria for which the introflexed and extroflexed surface is painted with acrylic, while the rest of the canvas is covered by polyester resin.
The Superficie opaline were born in 1970 and for around five years, Enrico Castellani continued to experiment in this environment, using resin, acrylics, glues and other substances to render a transparent effect on the canvas. This series of works is made up of about 40 pieces, some of which are of a larger format than the others.
This type of canvas surface treatment, that allows the central part of the structure to be partially unveiled,
was investigated by the artist only in those years. A possible reference to this investigation of structure can
be found in Carla Accardi's unpainted works made only of sicofoil. A brief and happy parenthesis for Carla, as for Castellani both worked in an environment of reflection on the act of painting and its means of expression. Their results have proved to be extremely successful, dictated by the heightened awareness of employed means and their unstoppable desire to reduce expressive means to the minimum terms.
