A VERY LARGE THANGKA DEPICTING BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI AND HIS LIFE STORIES
TIBET, 19TH-20TH CENTURY
Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted to the centre, seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base with his hands held in bhumisparshamudra, supporting an alms bowl in his lap. He is dressed in flowing robes and his hair is tied in tight knots, and piled in a tuft below a gold ornament. There are three lamas depicted below the Buddha, carrying offerings, and he is surrounded by various scenes from his previous incarnations in past lives.
