Lot Essay

Kirkpatrick refers to this particular copy on page 70 of her bibliography of Mansfield: "In a copy formerly in the collection of P. A. Lawlor and now in that of the late R. M. Rodewald of Auckland, pp. 375-376, i.e. M(12) have been removed and a cancel of 2pp. inserted. The copy is signed in ink on the upper free end-paper: 'John Middleton Murry', and has a pencilled note at foot: 'J.M.M. signed this for me at Constable's Office. P.A.L. 15-10-51.' ... In an uncorrected proof copy the text is identical with the published version, and in JMM's own copy of the book, the pages are not cancelled."
