The Best Short Stories of 1923 is dedicated to Katherine Mansfield. Of Atlanta's Garland, Kirkpatrick notes: "There are at least five variants ... Of the 2,000 copies printed, 950 were bound with white cloth spines and 50 numbered copies with vellum spines. These 1,000 copies were bound by November 1926; a further 250 copies were bound in 1927. The remaining 750 copies were pulped in June 1956. It is possible that the copies with cream paper boards patterned in olive-green ... comprise the 250 copies bound in 1927 and therefore constitute a secondary binding rather than variants."
