A LARGE EMBROIDERED BURGUNDY-GROUND 'WEDDING CELEBRATION' HANGING
DATED TO THE TENTH MONTH OF WUCHEN YEAR OF TONGZHI, CORRESPONDING TO 1868, AND OF THE PERIOD
The hanging is embroidered to the upper section with phoenixes flanking a central dragon with a medallion in its jaw inscribed with the characters Long zhang feng gao that may be translated as 'Dragon seal phoenix order', above an extensive dated dedicatory panel relating to a wedding ceremony and to the status of the groom's family. The panel is enclosed by finely worked scenes in colours and gilt thread of the wedding procession and Buddhist lion, together with phoenix and peony borders.
