“時常縈繞在我腦海中的一個問題,就是如何區別我『現在』在做的事情以及中國繪畫成形『以前』的樣貌,用以創造新的空間形式與意涵。有很多人將我們的文化傳承 視為絕對的權威,並對於某些學院與畫派的『正統性』深信不疑……我很想要創作一些新奇的作品,再加上一點革新,但這並不代表我會斷絕與傳統的一切連結,將我 的藝術視為中國水墨傳統也是一個不合常理的觀點,我一直在做的其實就是舒緩這些一層層的緊張關係。” ——蔡逸溪寫於2002年 蔡逸溪出生在中國的廣東省,於五十年代時移民至新加坡,並建立一個獨特且具代表性的個人風格,一個受到其海上畫派 (滬派)水墨畫恩師範昌幹影響深遠、筆觸即 興帶有現代感的藝術語言。《荷花池》系列為其最具代表性的作品,他將荷塘花朵帶給人的印象與精神性幻化成快速、毫不遲疑的精准書法筆觸,最終臻至中國水墨畫 的精髓。如此漸進之影響過程如同莫內帶給歐洲印象派的啟迪,借著捕捉自然萬象之朝氣與氣韻的同時,將冥想與簡約的特質注入其中,與其說是刻畫萬物風景的寫 實型態,較像借此觸及觀者最真實深層的感知。
