Lot Essay

Although the inscription suggests that this drawing was drawn after life ('naar't leven geteek [?]'), it is more likely that van Noorde made it after a sketch showing the same subject which he made on 5 June 1756 and which is part of a sketchbook, now in the Gemeentearchief, Haarlem (B. Sliggers, Het schetsboek van Cornelis van Noorde 1731-1795, Haarlem, 1982, p. 50, sketchbook page 37).
