Lot Essay

According to the eighteenth-century inscription this drawing is by the Leiden 'fijnschilder' Louis de Moni (1698-1771). In his 2006 article, however, Robert-Jan te Rijdt argued that this drawing can without doubt be given to Tibout Regters. Te Rijdt demonstrates that the subject and technique, especially the skilful use of pen and ink to suggest light and shadow in the clothes of the figures, are typical of Regters' drawings. A very comparable drawing, in both subject and technique, also given to Regters, is in the De Grez collection in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (inv. De Grez 2607; Te Rijdt, op. cit., fig. 13).
