Lot Essay

This drawing was given to Joseph Augustus Knip (1777-1847) and exhibited as such in the 1988 exhibition. However, the style is in fact closer to the work of Mattheus Derk Knip. Another very similar drawing, also attributed to Mattheus Derk Knip and previously in the van Regteren Altena collection, was sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 December 2014, lot 36.
