Lot Essay

Both recto and verso carry copies of engravings by Martin Schongauer (1440/50-1491): on the recto, from left to right, Saint John the Baptist (Hollstein 59), Saint Christopher (Hollstein 56), The standing Virgin and Child (Hollstein 35), and Christ blessing (Hollstein 32); on the verso, Saint Agnes (Hollstein 67).

Also known as the Master of the Coburg Roundels because a third of his known drawings are housed in the Veste Coburg, the artist was a draughtsman, designer of stained glass and painter active in Strasburg in the last quarter of the 15th Century. About 150 drawings have been attributed to him, and many of them record paintings, sculptures and engravings by Netherlandish and German artists, among whom Schongauer has a place of honour.
