Lot Essay

This drawing was previously considered by van Gelder to be an early work, circa 1615, by Jan van de Velde II (van Gelder, op. cit., 1933, pp. 52-3, no. 13). He later proposed an attribution to Jacob Matham (1571-1631) on the basis of stylistic similarities with a signed drawing by that artist (van Gelder, op. cit., 1955, p. 24). More recently, however, Peter Schatborn has resurrected the attribution to Jan van de Velde II, comparing it to a drawing now in Staatliche Museen, Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (KdZ 12190). This drawing was engraved by Simon Poelenborch (b. circa 1592) (Hollstein 4).
