Lot Essay

A preparatory study for a painting which was formerly with M. Knoedler & Co, New York (see A. Staring, 'Weinig bekende portrettisten', Oud Holland, LXI, 1946, p. 24, fig. 1). While working on a commission the artist would produce drawings such as this one to give the client an indication of how the finished painting might look. Like for other preparatory studies, Jonson van Ceulen wrote the name of the sitter on the verso of the present drawing (for other examples see J. van der Veen, in Leiden viert feest! Hoogtepunten uit een academische collectie, exhib. cat. Amsterdam, Rembrandt Huis, 2014, no. 33).
