Lot Essay

I.Q. van Regteren Altena had inventoried this drawing as 'Paulus Potter'. Peter Schatborn has suggested an attribution to Simon de Vlieger, comparing it to a Study of a mastiff lying down by the artist, also executed in black chalk on buff paper and signed with initials 'SDVL', in the British Museum (inv. 1895,0915.1340). The present drawing may also be compared to an etching by de Vlieger showing two recumbent pigs in a barn (Hollstein 16).
