The traditional attribution to Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) was rejected by Schnackenburg (op. cit., p. 208, F 16). He suggested that the drawing could have been by Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704) after a lost drawing by Isaac, pointing to the characteristic handling of the pen on the tree and the horse and the brown wash. More recently however, Susan Anderson, after examining the original, rejected the attribution to Dusart while not ruling out that it is a 17th Century copy after a lost drawing by Isaac van Ostade.
