Lot Essay

According to inscriptions found on similar drawings, these were used by Willem van de Velde II to illustrate drawing lessons he gave his son Willem van de Velde III (1667-after 1708). A similar drawing, showing studies of a three-master, was sold in the I.Q. van Regteren Altena Sale, Part II (Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 December 2014, lot 216).
