ACKERMANN, Rudolph (1764-1834). A History of the University of Cambridge, its Colleges, Halls, and Public Buildings. London: L. Harrison and J. C. Leigh for R. Ackermann, 1815.

3 volumes, large 4° (402 x 315mm), the founders plates bound separately. Half-titles and 4-page subscribers' list. Engraved portrait of the Duke of Gloucester on india paper (foxed) and 95 hand-coloured plates comprising 64 aquatint views by J.C. Stadler, D. Havell, J. Bluck and others after A. Pugin, F. Mackenzie, W. Westall and others, 15 hand-coloured stipple-and-line engraved costume plates, and 16 hand-coloured stipple-and-line engraved portraits of the founders of the various colleges. Extra illustrated with two original watercolours by Westall. Contemporary polished half calf, marbled boards, spine richly gilt (some light wear); cloth slipcases. Provenance: Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse (bookplates) -- R.N.H. Moore Stevens (bookplates) -- acquired at Sotheby’s London, 1 October 1946.

FINE LARGE-PAPER COPY. EXTRA ILLUSTRATED WITH TWO ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS, one of St. Peter’s (after p. 2, vol. I), the other of St. John’s College (after p. 82, vol. II, shown above). Westall's watercolours make a powerful use of light effects not captured in the aquatints themselves. However, the plates are strong early impressions with J. Whatman 1812 watermark, and the work is complete with the series of 16 founders, separately published and not always found with the set. It was originally published in 20 monthly from 1 May 1814 onwards, and this outstanding copy is likely to have been bound from the parts issue. Abbey Scenery 80; Tooley 4.
