2o (476 x 337mm). Etched and engraved title by H. Shaw and 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates after William Havell, Thomas Hofland and C.V. Fielding by Robert Havell & Son (title and last plate foxed, some other intermittent pale spotting, but colours fresh and bright.) Contemporary brown half morocco (light rubbing); cloth slipcase. Provenance: Joseph Neeld (1789–1856, Member of Parliament for Gatton, Surrey in 1830 and for Chippenham, Wiltshire, from 1830 to 1856; bookplate) -- acquired from Robinson, London, 1944.
FIRST EDITION. With the exception of the ‘double-elephant’ folio edition of Audubon’s Birds of America, this is the largest work produced by Robert Havell and Son. The lavish aquatints depict Windsor Castle, Park Place, Billingbear, Frogmore House, Wanstead House, Kings Weston, Cassiobury, Buckingham House Middlesex, Holland House, Chiswick House, Sion House, Blenheim (2), Holkham Hall, Burghley House, Richmond Hill, Corsham House, Fonthill Abbey, Longleat and Pantheon and Stourhead Gardens. A work of great rarity as well as beauty, only three other copies have sold at auction in the last thirty-five years, according to ABPC. Plates on J Whatman Turkey Mill watermarked 1813, 1817, 1818, 1823; text on J Whatman watermarked 1816, 1823. Abbey Scenery 395; Tooley 253.
