21 original parts, 8° (255 x 160mm). 20 coloured aquatints, one in each part, and 22 wood-engravings by and after G. Cruikshank. Half-title, coloured aquatint frontispiece and printed title in final part. (Light offsetting from plates, a few light spots.) Original pink printed wrappers, uncut; cloth chemise and red morocco pull-off case (light soiling around edges of wrappers, stronger on last part, a few small tears, case lightly rubbed). Provenance: Alfred Barmore Maclay (bookplate; purchased from him, 10 April 1945.)

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS, LARGE PAPER COPY with the pink wrappers as called for by Abbey and Cohn. Life in Paris was serialised every fortnight, commencing in November 1821. Cruikshank journeyed to Boulogne to sketch Gallic life, but when his cockney French failed to obtain him an English breakfast complete with mustard he took the next boat back across the channel. In Patten's view 'Carey's story is more a guide book for novice travellers than a narrative, and caters to the prejudices of xenophobic Corinthians like the illustrator' (Life I, p. 233). Abbey Travel 112; Cohn 109; Tooley 129.
