Details
NEWHOUSE, Charles B. (c.1805-1877). Incidents in Travelling. London: J. Watson, 1835.

Oblong 4° (268 x 375mm). 16 hand-coloured aquatint plates by R. G. Reeve after Newhouse on blue paper, heightened with gum arabic. Contemporary black half roan over boards, cut down original part wrapper laid down on front cover (some light rubbing and spotting); quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: Bibliotheca Bruggensi (ink stamp on front flyleaf) -- acquired from William Schab, New York, 1949.

'TREMENDOUSLY RARE' in the view of Joel Spitz who considered this the 'better' of two copies he owned. Charles B. Newhouse is an artist known solely for coaching subjects produced between 1830 and 1845. This set of aquatints was issued in parts and originally published by J. Watson. Abbey and Tooley record an issue published by T. McLean with 18 plates. The series was reissued in 1845 by Fores under the title The Roadster’s Album; an engraved title by Henry Alken was added to this later edition. See Abbey Life 406-7; Tooley 345 (both McLean issues); Siltzer p.192.
