ALKEN, Henry (Thomas) (1785-1851). Fox Hunting. London: S. and J. Fuller, 1 February 1813.
Oblong 2° (411 x 510mm). 4 hand-coloured etchings by Clark and Dubourg after Alken, tipped into an album, with tissue guards. (First plate with small chip and minor restoration at margins.) Mid 20th-century brown half morocco and grey buckram, spine lettered longitudinally in gilt, matching slipcase. Provenance: Dr. Leopold Heinemann, Berlin (small stamp on plate versos).
AMONG THE EARLIEST RECORDED PLATES BY 'THE PREMIER SPORTING ILLUSTRATOR OF HIS TIME' (Ray), issued without a general title. The individual plate titles read: 'Throwing Off'; 'Breaking Cover'; 'In Full Cry'; 'The Death'. The colouring is unusual with strong buff tints suggesting the melancholy hues of autumn.
