[ALKEN, Henry. Sporting Discoveries or The Miseries of Hunting in a series of seven plates, being hints to young sportsmen by Ben Tally-Ho]. London: S. and J. Fuller, 2 September 1816.
Oblong 2° (350 x 455mm. with mounts). 7 hand-coloured etched plates, window-mounted in an album. Dark brown morocco by Alfred de Sauty, with binder’s label dated 1935, covers gilt and blind ruled, front cover with black morocco title label, gilt spine with raised bands, gilt turn-ins and board edges (spine a little worn at extremities); cloth slipcase (frayed). Provenance: purchased from Arthur Reader, London, 20 December 1934.
FIRST ISSUE OF THIS EARLY ALKEN SERIES, 'rare, well-drawn and beautifully coloured' (Schwerdt). The companion piece to Miseries of Shooting, it was originally issued in wrappers which bore the title. The plates have the same imprint and extensive captions explaining each pitiful situation, be it waking up to snowy weather, leaving an expensive hat in a tree, clutching on to a bolting horse when the saddle has slipped, experiencing inextricable difficulties with jumps and ditches, or simply being alone and left ‘to lead your horse home, dead lame, strange country, night coming on accompanied with heavy rain.’ Spitz noted that three plates in his copy are watermarked 1815. Dixon 9 (later issue with plates dated 1 March, 1817, and three watermarked 1819); Schwerdt I, p. 22; Siltzer p. 69 (later issue).
